Well, since 1988 an American idea helps you get back into the political process via e-mail. “Move On” is a group of nonprofit organizations launching online petitions with individual comments, e.g. for a torture ban, against the Patriot Act renewal or against pro-corporate media ownership rules. “Move On” members may also raise money for social security ads or even coordinate a housing programme for hurricane victims. “Move On” claims to have over 3 million members across America, you can check www.moveon.org for information. And guess what- the idea breaks fresh ground in Europe ! For example German activists Christoph Bautz and Günter Metzges, based in Bremen, have recently organized their own online network “Campact”, addressing their petitions to German MEPs. They are loud in their praises of “Move On” and they claim to have 6.500 news-letters subscribers. He could have become rich as well, but unfortunately money went through his hands like water. Admittedly his famous operas did not really pay off, for example he got no more than (what today would be in Austrian money…) 11.000 euros, that is less than 10.000 $, for his opera masterpiece „Le nozze di Figaro“, composed in 1786. But Mozart managed to take advantage of his reputation in Vienna’s high society. Being a “Kammerkompositeur” (Imperial Chamber Composer), he earned an extra annual salary of 20,000 €, doing nothing more than writing dance music for court balls. In those days Viennese families were paying him over 20.000 € a year for piano-lessons!

In 2006 the Austrians will celebrate the so-called “Mozart anniversary year”, turning their Wunderkind into hot cash. Today the Mirabell Food Company sells over 60 million pieces of creamy “Mozart Chocolates” annually, smokers collect Mozart-ash-trays, little children love dice games inspired by “ Die Zauferflőte”, Mozart’s last musical effort. Anything else? Well, for all “bon vivants” I would suggest the “Mozart-bra”, just touch it and you will hear “Eine kleine Nachtmusik”, Mozart’s sensual serenade for string instruments…

All in all, the Vienna tourism industry counts on additional 250.000 overnight stays in the “Mozart-year” 2006 and expects an extra turnover of over 3 million €, that is more than 2 million $.
Not bad for a 9-million-people-country, right ?

(Source: “Rondo”, German magazine for classical music, Nr. 6/2005)

GENOSSE DER SCHWYTZER BOSSE !

Gerhard Schrőder soll in Rente gehen ?

TV SOAP GOES MOBILE !

World première in January 2006 for the first TV soap-opera broadcasted exclusively on your mobile phone - probably on Vodafone 3G handsets, but we don’t know yet for sure... British production company Farringdon Road Films is about to produce this innovative television program adapted to the small mobile phone format, with short actions and extreme close-ups.
Remember that recently satellite broadcaster BSkyB and Vodafone signed a deal, giving BSkyB access to 250.000 “third-generation-handset” subscribers in exchange for allowing Vodafone to launch a TV service on mobile phones. Rival firm O2 has already launched trial TV services, so now it’s easy to enjoy CNN, ITN or Cartoon Network on the move, but just imagine TV content produced exclusively for mobile phones. Start "scanbuying" in four steps :

1. Walk into the store, find your favourite item !

2. Take a photo of its bar code with your mobile phone's camera !

3. Check comparable bar-code prices from an online database !

4. After price check buy the item cheaper wherever you want !

Too good to be true ? The Scnabuy technology already exists in Japan. Now it is about to hit the U.S., after all today's "Swiss army knife" phones can do everything. But watch out, storekeepers may get upset about your bargain hunting ! Here you can learn the seven secrets of Russian soul and mentality:

1. Beauty, Красота = Inner but inaccessible beauty, spiritual strength based on the history of ideas, not on the outward appearance.

2. Community, Община = A real union of individuals having resigned from their individuality - and from their little individualities…

3. Compassion, Сострадание = Sympathy for people suffering, allegedly the opposite of Western self-absorbed behaviour.

4. Freedom, Свобода = Internal freedom, self-respect, different from the Western idea of self-control and “lack of authority”.

5. Goodness, Доброта = Goodness in this context means “living by following your heart”, not by obeying orders.

6. Spritiual–Soulful, Духовньій–Душевньій = Warmth, sacrifice of personal interest, allegedly the opposite of Western rationalism.

7. Virtue, Целомудрие = Spiritual harmony, unity with nature, power of personality and even sexual purity.

[ Source : Andrzej Lazari (Ed.) The Russian Mentality Dictionary, published by the Interdisciplinary Team of Soviet Studies at the University of Łodz, Poland. My comment : Comprehensive book, explains complicated behaviour patterns in clear words. Some of the authors seem to have a bias against Russia, but nevertheless their powers of observation are striking. I discovered this book in a Warsaw bookshop and would recommend it to all of you ! ]

A Der Kreativität sind keine Grenzen gesetzt.

A Definitiv !

( Quelle : Eigenes Interview )

WORLD CHAMPIONS IN CREATIVITY !

“The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers” by Prof. Paul Kennedy, Yale, is a highly original analysis on geopolitical issues since 1519. Similarly, economist Richard Florida gives as a new and somehow provocative wave to think about creativity.

In his book “The Rise of the Creative Class” he studies a growing social class, made up of people whose job is to be creative. He suggests that “The three T’s” of Technology, Talent and Tolerance determine which countries and regions will prosper in the future, for creativity is the most highly prized commodity in our economy.

Having set his own “Creativity Index”, Florida presents the world rankings in creativity: Sweden, Japan and Finland are the most creative countries in the world, followed by the USA, Switzerland, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway and Germany.

And not only that : Australia and Israel have allegedly a stronger creative community than Great Britain or France. Greece gets better marks for creativity than Italy or Spain. Italy has fallen in the rankings behind Russia and Estonia. And all Scandinavian countries attract more talented people than Germany does at the moment !

How come ? Well, Florida certainly knows that a solid business climate is of crucial importance, but he focuses even more on what he calls an “effective people climate with low barriers to entry”. His main criteria are not attractive tax models, but rather "openness to immigration", "lifestyle amenities", "specific cultural attributes" and the “acceptance of diversity and of gays in particular”.

By this yardstick, Florida has also presented his insightful U.S.-Creativity-Index. And the winner is, surprise, surprize…San Francisco ! Followed by Austin, Boston, San Diego, Seattle, Raleigh-Durham, Houston, Washington-Baltimore and New York.

Reading the creative class in the USA, Florida focuses on “free agents”, that is high potentials looking for the best creative eco-system to develope their ideas. Unfortunately he does not comment on “unwilling free agents”, that is people forced into casual or underpaid part-time jobs. But that’s quite another story…

( Sources : www.creativeclass.org, Richard Florida “The Rise of the Creative Class” in Washington Monthly, May 2002, “Die kreative Klasse” in MAX-Magazine, German Edition, November 2005 )

GOVERNING GLOBALIZATION

Globalization increases openness, but the current system seems incapable of facing new challenges. Do we have to reform our institutions or even create new ones? The United Nations University presents some suggestions, based on the manuscript of Deepak Nayyar (Ed.) "Governing Globalization: Issues and Institutions". According to this major UN research project, the international community should…

1. …reform the UN Security Council, taking account of the greater role being played bu non-Western countries since 1945.

2. …establish independent financing of the United Nations, possibly through some version of the Tobin tax.

3. …deploy a high quality UN international volunteer peace force.

4. …establish a “People’s Assembly” in the United Nations system, modelled on the European Parliament.

5. …create an “Economic Security Council” for global policies.

6. …redefine the role of the International Monetary Fund, focusing on crisis prevention, more representation and transparency.

7. …redefine the role of the World Bank, focusing on development policy and local participation in country programmes.

8. …redefine the role of the World Trade Organization, focusing on representative decision-making.

9. …establish institutional mechanisms for surveillance and coordination of national macroeconomic policies.

10. …increase the supply of emergency financing in times of crisis.

11. …create international sanctions for standstill provisions.

12. …allow countries to choose an exchange rate regime and to be autonomous in capital account liberalization.

13. …improve the framework in which financial markets operate, e.g. through “principles of corporate governance”.

14. …think of a World Financial Authority for managing systemic risk.

15. …establish an “international labour exchange”.

( Source: “The United Nations University” Policy Brief by courtesy of : World Institute for Development Economics Research, Helsinki, Finland ).

ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST : AN AMERICAN POINT OF VIEW

A few remarks about the economic performance of key players in the Middle East. Special Thanks to Ambassador Charles Ries for this contribution, based on his speech to American-Hellenic Chamber 16th Annual Conference in Athens, Greece.

ISRAEL : Disengagement from Gaza will provide additional impetus to the Israeli economy, which the Government has reformed over the past two years with drastic changes to pension and tax systems, and significant reductions in government spending. This has helped Israel bring down its deficit and begin to reduce its national debt. The changes also have helped move Israel out of the worst recession in its history and begin to grow strongly.

JORDAN : Since King Abdullah II succeeded to the throne in 1999, the nation has taken a number of steps to encourage foreign investment and economic activity. Jordan acceded to the World Trade Organization in April 2000. In addition, a U.S.- Jordan Free Trade Agreement entered into force in 2001. Jordan has undertaken key reforms in the information technology, pharmaceuticals, tourism and service sectors. It is implementing ambitious foreign and domestic investment laws that grant specific incentives to industry, agriculture and other sectors. In May 2001, the government converted the Aqaba port and surrounding area into a Special Economic Zone offering special incentives to investors.

EGYPT : On September 7, Egypt held its first-ever multi-candidate presidential election. This complemented important economic changes underway. The new cabinet embarked on energetic economic reform. The reformers successfully floated the Egyptian pound, reduced tariffs, moved to reform the financial sector, introduced measures in Parliament to simplify the tax structure while lowering rates, and reduced the amount of red tape necessary to conduct business. The result ? An economy that is now growing at a 4% clip.

CREATIVE THINKING - THINKING HATS

Here comes a technique designed to encourage you in adopting new perspectives when dealing with conflict or when managing change. The SIX THINKING HATS stand for different categories of thinking behavior. When working collectively you should recognize the need for all six hats, in order to consider different types of thinking to the subject. So you can put a different perspective on events and reach better decisions.
Each of the thinking hats is named for a color:

The WHITE hat is neutral, objective, focuses on mere facts. The question is: “What do I know about the subject ? Any statistics available ?”

The YELLO hat is sunny and positive, looks for your benefits. The question is: “Why doing it ? How can I make a profit out of all that ?”

The BLACK hat, on the other hand, is critical and negative. Here you are wondering: “What can go wrong ? What if I fail ?”

The RED hat represents emotions, impressions, intuition. Here you say:
“I feel dubious about…” or “I have a feeling that…”

The GREEN hat is for ideas, creative thinking, possibilities you didn’t see before: “Your idea is really good, but I have a better one…”

The BLUE hat represents the chairperson, the overview, the “big picture”: “Wearing this hat I will try now to organize all other hats”.

Edward de Bono, a smart guy from Malta, graduated in medicine, presented the Six Hat Tools in 1985 and since then he claimes to have invented “the first new way of thinking to be developed for 2.400 years”. Well, having visited a “Six Hats Tools” seminar, I can tell you that de Bono is not talking through his hat.

But watch out when booking, for currently individuals have to pay at least 700 $ for an one-day seminar, a group of up to 20 participants may get a special price of ca. 8.500 $. My black hat tells me:

THAT’S A LOT OF MONEY, ISN’T IT ?

( Sources : Seminar on “Six Thinking Hats”, www.buildingbrands.com )

10. Well, you SHOULD know him! CEM ŐZDEMIR,

German Member of the European Parliament for the Green Party, is apparently the personification of globalization! For five good reasons :

1. He is German of Turkish descent, living in Berlin and commuting to Brussels, Belgium or Strasbourg, France.

2. He was, at 28, the first deputy of Turkish origin in German History and also one of the youngest elected members in the German Parliament.

3. He contributed greatly to formulating a modern German citizenship law and urged immigrants to take the Latin community in the USA as a model of integration.

4. He is a former Transatlantic Fellow at the German Marhsall Fund, pronounced a ‘Star of Europe’ by ‘Business Week’magazine in 2002.

5. He is a strong advocate of Turkey’s accession to the European Union, but says that it is up to Turkey to comply with all criteria for accession.

Recently I had the opportunity of meeting and interviewing Cem Őzdemir for German Radio during the European Parliament’s session in Strasbourg, France. Here comes an extract from this interview:

Q First term as a Member of the European Parliament – welcome to Strasbourg! Your impressions of parliamentary work here?

A Exciting! Strangely the Parliament has its seat in Strasbourg, but most of our work is placed in Brussels and the Parliament’s committees also meet in Brussels… I’ll soon be used to all that, that’s just the way it is and I guess there is next to nothing you can do about it. Though I’d be quite happy if we would put everything together in Brussels… Apart from that, well, our work is exciting and quite different than parliamentary work in the National Assembly.

Q Berlin or Strasbourg – are you in a dilemma?

A I did not regret having entered the European Parliament. On the contrary, I think that working with different countries, operating in different cultures and in different languages is quite exciting. At last, that’s Europe! Though Europe has its shady sides as well, I mean you are really annoyed to find that there are MEP’s on the extreme Right or on the extreme Left, who actually disavow the parliamentary system, but nevertheless are quite happy to enter the Parliament… But on the other hand you meet here several people who want to shape modern Europe, they want to work for peace, for justice, for the preservation of natural resources in our continent.

Q Turkey’s entry to the European Union is finally high on the agenda in Brussels. What’s the outlook?

A For the moment Turkey’s entry is not the point, first of all we are talking about opening formal negotiations and we all know that negotiations for entry will take some time. I’ve been elected for 5 years and I am dead certain that Turkey won’t be ready for membership for the next five years. There is still a divergence between Turkey and the European Union, for example over upholding of human rights and personally I am very sensitive to that. Nevertheless, we all agree that so far Turkey has put up a great performance, just think of the fight against torture, of the civil-military relations, of allowing Kurdish language courses… More needs to be done, but despite today’s shortcomings, the fact remains that the country is changing and will change even more. So the crucial question is: Shall we reward Turkey by saying ‘O.K., good job, go on like that’? Or shall we rather say ‘O.K. you are changing, but in spite of everything we simply don’t let you in’?

Στο σύγχρονο και πολύγλωσσο weblog ‘Globalize it’ !

Με σκέψη out of the box.

BIBLIOGRAPHY ON GLOBALIZATION !

Let us recommend you some great books from all over the world on globalization, Generation X and recent developments in international politics.

ABC der Globalisierung: Von Alterssicherung bis Zivilgesellschaft.
Hamburg 2005.
